Funny stories from Uni Games, intra state trips or local events

Posted in

Without breaking any dingo fences, relay a story or two that you can recall, no matter how hazy, or embellished.

I can recall making a trip to Whyalla (1993) to play in their Country challenge, we shared a bus down with the state mixed side, coached by Bob Coffey and managed by Gavin Schnieder. We stayed at a place that was previously a convent. The beds were easily 40 plus years old, and were so worn from people sleeping in them they had a groove that you couldn't move from even if you tried.
At the end of the first day we went to a local cafe to grab a few coffees before heading off out for tea. One of the state players, Brian Varcoe, ordered a drink that wasn't even on their menu. We all thought it was hillarious when the lady took his order (along with the others) and headed off. We had another good laugh when he had this huge pink coloured milkshake brought out. Even Bob had a huge laugh when the bill came and Brian had to pay $8 for his drink.

I'm sure there a some stories out there that are far funnier than this one

Social butterflies abound

Friday 25th Nov saw the inaugural AUTC Uni Blues and Club Letters Pub Night merrily start what will hopefully become an annual event for the club!

About 30 people converged on the couches and tables of our own area in the Griffins Head to have some drinks, be happy and celebrate the achievements' of the seven people who received these Sports Association awards. It was a great night, and hopefully we'll have some more recipients so we can do it again next year!

The Harry Potter movie night last Friday was also a fantastic night. Of course, the movie was (personally) the highlight, but a great time was had by everyone after when we found dinner and drinks along O'Connell St.

So thanks to everyone who came along, to Henna for his contact at the Griffins Head, to Laura Teakle for organising the movie night a couple of months ago, and to Tahlia Christie for supplying half the Harry Potter audience! Thanks guys.

Look out for more social events soon!

Hey Chippies,

Its 'Vag' (The Asian one) from UTS at Uni games. The team had heaps of fun on the occasions we played with you; dissapointing for you lot about the last game. Hope Chip is well; we were devastated when you didn't turn up with chip on the last day!

Hello to Soph who wrote on my shirt on High School Shenanigans night.

Best AUTC Team Ever

So there are a lot of good players that come from AUTC... but what about teams... who are those teams that have risen from the ashes to take a premiership medallion, or have intimidated the opposition so as to win so many games they are simply known as the best...

What has been your favourite team..my opinion is naturally prejudiced because i cannot remember back to the 60s when the old boys (i.e. DJ, Matt Gray, Henno etc ) started out with the club :) but my nominations are...:

SUG Gold Medal Winning Side 2004:
-this team went away with a bona fide lack of experience and only 9 players in a tournament that is not just about the quality of touch but a war of attrition...All players hit the town hard and then smashed their opponents... defence was not what this team was about, the philosophy was score more than them (a 13-12 drop-off victory in a semi-final against La Trobe was match of the whole tournament)... And then to come home with the gold medal... what a story what a team...
