Grand Final Match Reports

Submitted so far: AUTC C, AUTC D

Male and female highest touchdown scorers to be announced at the Autumn drinks, Thursday 27 May.  SeeAUTC Digest: week beginning 24 May, 2010 for details.

AUTC won 3 out of 4 divisions!

    • AUTC Es were almost entirely made up of players new to touch-football but all trained solidly through the season and improving every week before getting so good that they won the final  in convincing style 4-2.
    • AUTC Ds came back from 2-4 down to win in spectacular fashion with a touchdown after the siren to win 5-4.  Jo celebrated with cup-cakes.
    • AUTC As remained undefeated all season winning their final 5-1.

For me the best thing was that so many people stuck around after their games to watch the other AUTC teams in action.

AUTC C - Game 11

AUTC C had a chance to qualify for the much coveted "Fork" Grand Final, but alas defense was lacking, and the team just wasn't quite on the ball.
Best: (M) Adam Potter, (F) Chantal Hadchiti. Touchdowns: Paul Smith (2). Adam Potter (1). Final result: Loss (3 – 5).

AUTC C - Game 12

AUTC C was a different team coming into the last game for the season, and were impressive in both attack and defense. Excellent rucking through the midfield moved the team to the line on nearly every set and exposed a myriad of gaps in the opposition's defense. A far more intensive defensive effort helped keep the opposition scoring down. One of our better games for the season - with the whole team playing close to their best.
Best: (M) Adam Potter, (F) Ainslie Derrick-Roberts. Touchdowns: Paul Smith (4), Simon Derrick-Roberts (1). Final result: Win (5 - 2).

AUTC D(amn we’re good!)

Game 1 saw us face The Charlatans who had previously beaten us 5-3 in week 2. The first half of the game was very close with both teams keeping each other out. Early in the second half The Charlatans broke through and gained a 4-2 lead despite some heroic defensive efforts (Caleb’s dive springs to mind). The team was starting to feel the pressure from the opposition’s speedy breakthroughs and the rucking broke down a bit. But to everyone’s credit, the team pulled themselves together and got back to basics. Some brilliant efforts on the line pulled the score line back to 4-4 and it looked like things were going to end in a drop. However, in the final seconds of the game three players put on a brilliant display of gap hitting, themed passed to the link, the link to the wing and KAZAAAM! We won!! It was very exciting.

Touchdowns: Andrew Cannella ( 3), Caleb Lilley (1), Nick Purdam (1)
Best: Caleb Lilley for fantastic efforts in defence, especially on the line in the middle.

Grand Final
After the excitement of winning in the dying moment of game 1, the team was pumped up for the second game. There weren’t as many impressive touchdowns scored in this game, but the team pulled together to deliver a sold defensive effort, keeping our opposition from scoring despite repeated sets of 6 near the line. The refereeing was a bit tougher than we were used to, with the 5 metres becoming 7 and oversteps being policed more strictly.

Despite the harsher reffing, the Ds kept their cool and maintained their A-game, rucking consistently and spreading nice and wide on the line. The team looked absolutely superb and in control of the game the whole way through which eventually resulted in 2 touchdowns. The siren came and AUTC D had just won their first Grand Final! Providentially, some heavily iced cupcakes were on hand to help celebrate. A great season Ds, everyone improved so much – no doubt we will have some mean AUTC teams over winter.

Touchdowns: Caleb Lilley (1), Nick Purdam (1)
Best: Nick Purdam for consistently hitting those gaps and creating opportunities on the line.
